When you're applying to colleges, you want each school to see the real you: all the passions, achievements, and strengths that make up a complete picture of who you actually are. But the sad truth is that this holistic picture is always going to be overshadowed by a handful of numbers that are supposed to sum up your academic potential. You need those numbers to be telling the same story you want colleges to see.
How do you make that happen?
Choose Your Best Test
In theory, you could keep taking both the SAT and ACT over and over again throughout the year and then send your best scores to colleges. However, because these two tests are so different, it's better to choose one to focus on. If you've already taken each test or a reliable diagnostic mock test, you can compare your results. While the score scales are quite different, you can easily use percentiles to determine which test you're performing better on.
If you're doing better on the ACT, don't get distracted by trying to bring up your SAT score at the same time. By all means, experiment with both tests at first, but once you've determined which one gives you a better shot, go all in on it. Learn the strategies and techniques appropriate to that test, and practice as much as you can!
Practice in a Simulated Environment
You don't want test day to feel like a scary, high-pressure event. You want to walk in confidently, knowing exactly what it's going to be like.
If you do all your test practice lying in your bed at home, or answering a few questions on your phone in between TikTok breaks, you're not going to be prepared for the reality of the 3-4 hour mental marathon you're about to undertake.
Don't get me wrong, working on practice problems without time pressure can be helpful, especially if you're taking the opportunity to look at each problem from multiple angles and figuring out the most efficient method.
But if you never take full timed practice tests under simulated conditions, you'll risk having an unrealistic approach to problems that require speed, and you won't be prepared for the test of endurance.
At the very least, you need to take 2 full timed mock tests under realistic simulated conditions within the 2 or 3 months before the test.
Focus on Your Weak Spots
We often hear that mistakes are actually learning experiences. This is only half true; they're learning opportunities.
Let's say you're playing Fortnite. (For the sake of this example, it's okay if you've never played it. I actually haven't either, but I figure I know how video games work, so I'm just going to BS my way through this example.) You're exploring, staying on the move, trying not to get killed, when across a broad clearing, you see a rocket launcher. Cool!
But if you never actually go over there and get it, you still don't have a rocket launcher. You've just got, what, pruning shears?
In the same way, making a mistake on a practice test is an awesome opportunity, but only if you follow through. If you figure out exactly why you missed that one problem (Vocabulary? Dropping a negative?) and start practicing the habit or concept that you're missing, then you won't make that same mistake again, and you'll probably add points to your score.
Don't leave those points on the table. Keep an organized list of every reason why you've missed a problem in the past, and make sure you're practicing consistently in those areas.
hIf you think about test day as the end-all-be-all of your whole future, you're not going to do your best. Take it easy! Yes, this is important, and that's why you're putting so much effort into preparing. But listen, it's not life or death (even if your parents say it is).
Test day is not an all-or-nothing, one-shot event. You can take the ACT or SAT again! And for a lot of schools, you can mix and match section scores from different test dates to present only your best results.
Try to go into the test with a spirit of detachment: whatever happens, happens. Paradoxically, the less you care about your score while you're testing, the better you're going to do.
Now I know that's easier said than done. You can't just magically forget how much the score really does matter. But you can shift your attention to other aspects of the experience. Believe it or not, test prep is not just an exercise in jumping through pointless hoops. It actually has a lot of relevance to real life, and if you've done it right, you've learned key problem-solving skills like lateral thinking and structural analysis.
As you take the test, monitor your own thinking and notice yourself using those techniques that you've learned over the past months. If your focus is on celebrating your own success, you can relegate your anxiety about scores to the background and just drop into the flow.

October 1 - FAFSA opens for application
This isn't a deadline, but you should pretend it is. Filing early means that your scholar may get access to more aid, since some colleges award aid on a first-come first-serve basis. They'll also receive their Student Aid Report earlier, so you'll have a clear sense of where they stand.
(The one caveat here is that if you know your 2020 income will be substantially less than it was in 2019, you might need to contact the schools' financial aid offices to have your true current income considered.)

Of course, there's a lot more to it! The SAT and ACT are offered throughout the year. And there are plenty of other activities along the way, some of which can be planned more flexibly (such as visiting colleges, meeting with counselors, and enrolling in test prep).

So you got your PSAT score back, and don’t love it. You know that next to your GPA, the most important thing for getting into the college you want and getting scholarships is your SAT score, and you’re not sure this number is going to cut the mustard.
Please don't worry. Your PSAT score does not seal your fate. It’s a fairly accurate prediction of how you will score if you don’t lift a finger to prepare between now and March 14.
But you’re going to lift a finger. In fact, you’re going to lift your whole hand right now, fist clenched and shaking at the sky and vowing to the high heavens that you WILL see at least a 100 point increase in your score. Say it with me: “I can and will crush the SAT in March!”
Here’s the plan:
Drill the Skills
Compared with the massive truckloads of information that gets unloaded on your poor brain in high school, the list of skills you really need to do well on the SAT is pretty manageable. In math, you won’t need to differentiate any functions or calculate any inverse cosines or do any of a hundred other things you learn in precal. In English, you don’t have to identify any quotations from Shakespeare or (blech) journal your “responses” to literature.
There is a finite list of core skills that you need to know, and you’ve probably been exposed to every one of them before at some point. Maybe you didn’t learn all of these perfectly when they were first introduced, but with a few hours of consistent, structured practice every week, you can master them.
Remember, this is all stuff you’re almost certainly going to actually use, not just on the SAT, but in your high school and college classes!
Know How to Practice
The only way to get better at taking the SAT is to keep taking the SAT.
Luckily, that doesn’t mean you have to sign up for every test date from now to December hoping to get better each time. There are ten full, official practice tests available online or in the very inexpensive Official SAT Study Guide (which you need to get ASAP).
But just taking these tests one after the other isn’t going to help. You need to use them intelligently. Trial and error only works if you take the time to process the errors and actually change your approach the next time.
Every improvement you make in your skills and your approach to the test will come by recognizing a weakness and turning it into a strength. But first you have to see the weakness.
So don’t move on to the Practice Test 2 until you’ve analyzed every question you missed on Practice Test 1, and can honestly explain why you got the wrong answer and state in very clear and specific terms exactly what you need to do differently next time. The answers in the back of the Official Study Guide can (sometimes) be very helpful in this process!
Once you know what you need to change, make a list of positive, specific, repeatable actions that you will apply to the next practice test. This is your Green Light list and you'll have it with you as you take the next practice test. It might look something like this for the reading section:
Your list might be different. Maybe it will have fewer skill-based Green Lights (like #2) and more psychological ones (like #4). Maybe it’ll be a longer or shorter list. It’s unique for you because it’s your own personal guide to exactly what you need to change.
Quick and Dirty "Secrets"
Purveyors of fat, expensive test prep books would like you think that there’s a black book of sneaky secrets that will effortlessly add hundreds of points to your score.
Yes, there are a few simple tactics that can make a significant difference. But you probably already know the most important ones, and if you don’t, you can find them via a simple web search. Things like avoiding extreme statements, using process of elimination to make an educated guess, and trial and error using the answer choices—none of these things are actually secrets.
And you’ll hit a point of diminishing returns on this approach pretty quickly.
Don’t get overwhelmed wading through hundreds of finicky, conflicting “secret keys” to the test. Just focus on those proven techniques.
Don't Go It Alone
The idea of “pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps” sounds brave and noble until you actually think about the image. Just consider the physics: when you lift something, you’re also pushing down against your point of leverage by that same effort. So if you pull up on your own bootstraps, you’re not going anywhere.
You’re trying to overcome your own limitations. And that’s not something to be undertaken without help.
You make progress only through a consistent, repeated cycle of commitment, accountability, and reality. A trusted ally can be your point of leverage for all three. If you make a promise to someone else that you’re going to follow through on this, that’s a much more powerful commitment than a promised made to yourself. If you’re in it together, they’ll be there to hold you accountable. And when you can’t see past your own strengths and weaknesses, they can give you that dose of reality to help you see the next steps.
Maybe it’s a study group. Maybe it’s a tutor. Or you can team up with a reliable partner.
“Reliable” is the key word. Think of your most dependable friend and invite them to join you on the way. Tag or email them with a link to this page and let them know you’re excited to get the killer score you know you can accomplish.
Now go get that score!
Imagine walking in on a group of friends in the middle of a conversation.
If your friends are jerks, they might just keep talking while you stand there, trying to figure out what they're discussing, wondering whether you should just leave. But if they're kind and thoughtful, one might greet you and say something like, "Hey, I'm glad you're here! Let me tell you what we've been talking about."
It's a simple courtesy, but there's a lot going on in an invitation like this. By offering to catch you up on the discussion, your friend implies that they think you'll be interested and they want you to be involved; they want to hear your point of view. Maybe they need your advice. Or maybe they just want to see whether you notice something they didn't.
But at the same time, they understand that you won't be able to contribute until you understand the main points of the conversation so far.
That, in a nutshell, is what your education is all about. Throughout history, we've been having this amazing, important conversation about what this world is, how it works, who we are, and what we should do.
And now that you're here, we want to get you up to speed so you can participate and give your unique point of view.
Since you were born several thousand years into the conversation, we have a lot to catch you up on. So much, in fact, that we've developed complex systems for getting newcomers up to speed. You've got to learn in one or two decades what it took the human race millennia to figure out.
So we need these systems (called "schools") to make it possible to bring you into the conversation.
If we could pass it all on with a few casual summaries, we certainly would; we're eager to see how you'll contribute. We can't though, because the details matter.
In this conversation you're coming into, it's tough to follow through on the promise to fill you in on what you've missed. But we're determined.
We've painstakingly sifted everything that's been said and done in the world to narrow it down to the ones that are most relevant.
We've devised and revised and perfected all kinds of techniques for getting skills and information across.
We've even developed tools you can use on your side to learn more effectively and easily.
And this is where we have to acknowledge that none of this works without some definite effort on your part. We're doing all we can to make this conversation open to everyone, but there's a point at which you have to step up and bear some of the weight.
Imagine the same scene as before from the opposite point of view. You've been having an absolutely fascinating conversation with a group of people when a good friend walks into the room. You're excited to get their take on the discussion, and you know they're going to find it really interesting, too.
But you need to convey a lot of background materials to set up the conversation. You try to convey your enthusiasm and assure your friend that they're going to find this just as interesting as you do.
Now there are some ways your friend could react that might make sense from their point of view but in your mind are obviously wrong and short-sighted.
Suppose they immediately start telling you their opinions on the subject, without getting the facts first. You might be pleased at first by their eagerness to be involved, but they don't seem to appreciate how complex this topic is.
Or suppose they listen to you for a minute, then start looking bored and tell you they're not interested. You tell them you haven't even gotten to the good part yet, but they insist that this subject just isn't their cup of tea. How can they be so sure? They don't even know what it is yet!
In the context of school, these two reactions are a little easier to understand. It's a lot of work, and it's hard to see what it's all for. That's in the nature of the game, because part of what school is for is to give you the full context to appreciate what school is for. You don't really start to see it until you're pretty far in, when you have the benefit of the higher vantage point your education will give you.
We get the problem with this idea. We wouldn't trust a salesman who told us that we wouldn't understand the benefits of his product until after we'd paid for it. But nobody's trying to sell you anything here. On the contrary, we're trying to give you our greatest treasure, and we just need your help loading it onto the truck.
Why is your education so urgent for us? Why do we go to such lengths to support it and urge you along? There are at least two reasons, intertwined with each other.
One is that when a person has a hold of something good, their enjoyment of it increases the more they share it. So having received an education ourselves, we're eager to magnify our joy by making you part of it.
The other is that we recognize and respect your place in history. Whether you choose to or not, you will in a short time be deciding the course of human civilization.
You can't opt out of this fact.
If you decide to do as little as you can, maybe getting a job to pay the bills and spending the rest of the time in your apartment playing Fortnite, then by that very inaction you're deciding not to make any of the many contributions to society you're capable of.
This isn't just about getting the grades so you can get the job so you can make the money so you can buy the house. It's about looking at the future and deciding to be ready for it, by accepting the discipline of study, by sweating the small stuff so you can get the big picture, and by cooperating with the system we've designed to help you.
We want you to be involved in this conversation. We need your point of view. In a very short time, you're on. It's your show. It will be up to you, based on all you've learned about what this world is, how it works, and who we are, to start deciding what we should do, and how.
We're hoping you'll see what a big deal that is and decide right now to step up to the responsibility.
We're glad you're here. Let us tell you what we've been talking about.
Psychological studies of "overlearning" have shown that for many purposes, there's not much benefit to drilling skills that you've already mastered. Once you're able to do something 100% of the time, there's no long-term upside to continued practice.
In fact, studying beyond that point of diminishing returns can be harmful, if it's distracting you from more important study tasks, or causing you to miss the forest for the trees.
Is overlearning a problem in SAT prep?
For the most part, no. The most recent studies show that while overlearning is not helpful for long-term retention, it can be useful when short-term retention is the goal (when you're studying for, say, one giant 3.5-hour test).
Besides, the most important things you can do to prepare for the SAT have a very high ceiling, and have great benefits beyond the test itself.
Still, there are a few areas where less is more.
Don't Overdo These
On some things, the point of diminishing returns kicks in pretty quickly, and you won't get anything at all out of pressing forward on them:
You don't need most of trig on the SAT. Learn SOHCAHTOA, the basic co-function identities, and the law of sines.
Same for geometry. Know the most important theorems and how to apply them, but don't worry about being able to prove them. On the SAT, it's enough just to know that say, alternate interior angles across parallel lines are congruent; you don't have to know why.
Vocab used to be really important, but that was de-emphasized in the 2016 overhaul, in favor of "words in context."
It still helps to have a somewhat sophisticated vocabulary, but to that end you'll get a lot more out of just reading some good books than trying to cram a list of five dollar words into your head.
As for test-taking tactics, a lot of the test prep giants want you to believe that they have a trove of "secrets," perfectly engineered keys that you can use to unlock the test without actually having to get better at the core skills.
Most of these "secrets" aren't secret at all. We're talking about things like process of elimination, trying out the answer choices, and reading the questions before you read the passages.
Yes, you can increase your score maybe 50+ points with basic test-taking skills like these skills that you'll learn easily for free with one web search.
But anything much more ingenious won't help, and can actually get in the way.
One workbook from a leading test prep company encourages students to practice looking for "trap" answers on each reading question.
Many students, especially smart ones, tend to overthink these problems already. Teaching you to play mind games with the questions will just make this psychological hurdle even harder to overcome.
You're really going to rule out an answer choice because it looks "too obvious" and must be a "trap?"
Sometimes, the answer choice seems obvious because it's right. Maybe you understood this passage more clearly or than others, or maybe you analyzed the question more accurately, or maybe it's just an easy question!
Get a few strategies and tactics under your belt, then get cracking on the content.
There are a few activities for which you can reach a point of mastery and even benefit in the short term from some continued practice after you've already mastered them:
Aim for perfect or near-perfect performance on these fundamentals. Once you can consistently finish test sections on time, remember your formulas, and avoid mechanical grammar errors, it's not going to hurt you to keep practicing, and might boost your retention in the short term.
Just don't let that practice get in the way of staying on top of your school work and outside reading.
As Much as You Can!
Here are some score-boosting habits that will always be worth doing more of:
Unless you already have a Ph.D. (and even then perhaps), you're always going to have room to grow in these areas. Keep pushing your reading up a notch.
To get you moving, I've started a list of books that I think will challenge and surprise you. I plan to keep adding to the list, so check back if you start to run out of material.

I'm always telling students that "always guess C" is the dumbest piece of advice you can get for the SAT. But a wrong clock is right twice a day, and it look like students following that advice just got lucky.
A few weeks ago on March 10, after months of preparation, sharpened number twos at the ready, thousands of students sat in rooms around the country to read, write, calculate, and bubble in.
For those who'd taken practice tests, everything was as they expected. The instructions, the answer sheets, the time limits and questions types were identical to the practice versions.
But after answering the first ten questions, a creeping uneasiness began to overcome many of the students.
Ten C's in a row? That can't be right, can it?
Jana Fletcher, a junior from Mountain Pine School of Fine Arts in Louisiana, remarked, "My tutor told me not to worry if I got a bunch of answers the same in a row. It can happen, I know. But after ten C's I was pretty shaken.
"I looked back and rethought those questions like three times."
Then things got weirder.
Twenty-one questions in, Jana still hadn't found a single A, B, or D that seemed even remotely reasonable. She stole some glances around the room and noticed a few other students staring at their answer sheets in disbelief.
Students who went in well-prepared and confident were increasingly shaken and disturbed as they continued bubbling C for every single answer.
But they were right.
This morning, the College Board acknowledged that due to an error in their final proofing algorithms, every single answer on the entire test was C.
Many are calling on the College Board to invalidate the scores. Others argue that the scores need to be corrected to adjust for the psychological effect of the error.
A growing group of students are discussing a possible law suit for emotional damage.
Amazingly, even the answers to the "Student-produced response" questions (commonly known as the "grid-ins")—which are not multiple choice and require students to enter a rational number between 0 and 9999—were also all C.
Usually, a considerable number of students claim a perfect or near perfect score on the essay section. This time, only one student, Sachairi Pensak, a junior from Robert A. Plant High in New Jersey, even came close; he submitted the following essay, scoring 4/4 in two categories, and 3 in the other:
"I knew I should have written a more substantial conclusion," Pensak commented, "but I was running out of time."

It happened to me:
I was waiting for a website to load, which because of the ancient one-year-old technology I still use, can take as much as five seconds (I know, right?), and to pass the time, I reached for my phone.
Alarmingly, it was not in my pocket.
I shuffled around for some time, increasingly anxious, tearing the room apart, searching behind cushions, on the floor, under the bed. It had been right there, moments before, within my grasp, I was sure. In fact, I distinctly remembered holding it in the very palm of my hand.
As a matter of fact, there it still was in my grip, having just finished loading that website.
Yes, that's right:
I was so addicted to my phone that I would reach for it even while it was already in my hand.
I'm not embarrassed to admit that I had this problem. In fact, I'm excited to tell you how bad I had it, because it proves how dramatically I changed, using the method I describe below. Today, instead of letting my devices control me, I control them. Instead of making snarky social media posts, I make actual decisions about how I'm going to live each moment of my life. Can you imagine? Decisions.
Some days, I'm awake for hours before it even occurs to me to check my phone.
If even I can stop constantly checking my phone and start living my life, so can you.
But you have to think about this the right way. If you just make a resolution to get a hold of yourself, then grit your teeth and try not to pull your phone out every time you feel like it, then you're going about it all wrong.
The Will Power Trap
You might say to yourself right now, "I'm only going to look at my phone when I really need to from now on." And maybe you have enough will power to push through till dinner time. But as you start to get tired, or stressed, or overwhelmed by responsibilities, that resolution is going to weaken, and you'll fall back on your habits.
I'm willing to bet that's happened to you before. And you probably blamed yourself. You weren't "motivated enough." You didn't "really want it." Whatever story you told yourself, it was based on the idea that you change your behavior by having enough will power.
But if you believe that, you're dooming yourself to a cycle of failure, because nobody has enough will power to make a permanent change in their lives just by deciding to do it. If you try to make the change on will power alone, you're going to fail, and that failure is going to reinforce your belief that you can't change.
Everyone runs out of motivation eventually, and when that inevitably happens, habits take over.
The only way to get ahead of that process is to take control of it. Instead of leaning on will power, take charge of the habits themselves.
It's easier than you think.
Just Stop Trying
Any behavior strategy that depends on "trying harder" and "powering through" is doomed.
We love stories about people with high and noble goals who push and strive until they reach the height of achievement. But the reality is that constant effort is an exhausting way to live your life, and sooner or later most people are going to run out of juice.
Instead of trying harder to do the difficult thing, what if you made it so easy to do that you didn't even have to try?
For years, I chastised myself for spending too much time doodling around on my phone. I tried and tried to resist the urge to pull it out. But the habit was stronger than my effort. The beautiful and horrible thing about habits is that they move faster than our decision-making process. By the time it occurred to me to "resist the urge," I'd already have the darn phone in my hand.
So I stopped trying.
I don't mean that I gave up. I mean that instead of trying to stick to a resolution, I created a system that would get me away from my phone without my ever having to decide not to look at it. The system did the work for me. All I had to do was design and implement it, and almost overnight I was spending less than half as much time on my phone, without even once telling myself not to use it.
The core of my strategy is a method developed by my mentor, Stanford behavior scientist BJ Fogg. His Tiny Habits system is the only complete habit formation method that has been scientifically validated as an effective way to create new habits that last, quickly and easily.
With an open mind and a willingness to practice, anyone can make this system work for them. The simple breakthrough idea is that a habit is like a seedling, which planted in the right place, will naturally grow into whatever fantastic organism you care to imagine. It's hard to install a full-grown tree, but it's easy to plant a seedling. In the same way, it's easy to create a very small habit that will naturally grow into the big, important changes you want to see.
All you have to do is make it so easy that you won't feel any resistance, no matter how unmotivated you feel. It has to be something quick. Practice that tiny little habit, and every time you do, celebrate like you just won the Nobel Prize. Soon you'll be doing it automatically. And soon after that, you'll find yourself naturally taking the next steps.
Want to floss every night? Celebrate flossing one tooth after you brush! Soon you'll be flossing them all.
Want to go running every morning? Celebrate putting on your gym shorts after you get out of bed! Soon you'll be heading out the door.
Want to stop checking your phone all the time?
Well, this is just a little more complicated, because it's about not doing something. In order to create a Tiny Habit around this goal, first I had to translate it into a positive form. For me, the problem with my phone wasn't just that I was using it too much. The problem was that I was using it for no reason. I kept swiping it open automatically, even when there was absolutely nothing I needed to check or do or find out.
So the new habit I needed was just to stop for three seconds to ask myself what I actually wanted to do. All I had to do was put a little pause in between the impulse and the action.
Here's the habit I came up with, following the Tiny Habits recipe:
"When I notice an urge to reach for my phone, I will open my journal, look at today's list, and say, "What should I do now?" (I keep a to-do list for each day in my bullet journal.)
Notice what isn't in that recipe. Nowhere does it say that I will then not look at my phone. I absolutely gave myself permission to look at my phone as much as I wanted to. The only difference was that first, I would stop for a moment and notice whether I actually wanted to do it. More than half the time, I'd realize there was something else I actually wanted to do, and without even trying, I wouldn't feel like looking at my phone anymore.
I never had to fight with myself. I was still doing exactly what I felt like doing. I had just given myself a chance to feel like doing something else!
It might look a little funny to some people that I periodically open up my journal, mutter to myself, and then do an excited fist pump. But personally, I think that's less ridiculous than walking around all day like a zombie with no purpose other than to consume a stream of information I don't care about.
So when are you going to start?
It's easy enough to say that you should learn from your mistakes. What that actually looks like in practice is another question.
Power Student readers already know that you haven't learned from a mistake unless you've created a new habit because of it. Mistakes made have to be translated into lessons learned. Red ink has to be turned into Green Lights.
Because the Green Light method is about creating new habits based on the corrections you've received, each piece of feedback has to be translated into terms that can support a positive change in behavior. That is, each Green Light statement has to be positive, definite, and repeatable.
Keep these three qualities closely in mind as you develop your Green Lights, and you'll be amazed at your own progress.
A negative statement won't help you create better habits, for the simple reason that not doing something is the opposite of an action. You can't make a habit of not doing something.
So to create effective Green Light statements, you need to flip the sign: convert any negative feedback into positive statements.
If the red ink says, "fragment" or "oops, wrong sign" or "what were you even trying to spell here," you have to translate it into a positive action in order to benefit from it. "Don't write sentence fragments" is not a Green Light. Instead, write, "I will check each sentence to ensure it is complete." Instead of "Don't lose track of the negative signs in math problems," write, "When I finish solving a problem, I will review the steps to make sure I kept the right sign for each term at each step."
If your teacher is wise and compassionate, you're probably getting some positive feedback, too. Great! You don't have to flip the sign on that feedback. But do create a Green Light from it, so that you keep doing whatever you did right this time.
Vague ideas don't translate well into action. "Get better at quadratic equations" is not a Green Light. In order to improve a skill like factoring quadratics you need to identify what step in the process you're missing or performing incorrectly, and work on that. For example, you might conclude that you're forgetting to check whether the coefficients in a quadratic expression have a common factor. In that case, your Green Light statement would be, "When I start factoring a quadratic equation, I will check the coefficients for a common factor." Even better would be a physical action that you can visualize, like "tap the coefficient of each term with my pencil."
With an appropriately definite Green Light statement, you'll know exactly what to do next time, without even having to think about it.
On the other hand, if you get too specific with your Green Light statement, it will never apply to any situation except the one in which it originally arose. Take the following statement:
This aspect of Green Lights can be more difficult to master than the others. Sometimes it isn't obvious how to extend the idea beyond the particular situation. If you missed a True/False question on a history quiz, and the only mark is a red slash through the number, what can you really do with that? You could create a list of history facts you've had trouble recalling on quizzes, and that would have some value as a study guide. But it wouldn't be a Green Light list.
To develop a repeatable action out of a case like that, you may have to dig a little bit. The key is to ask "why" until you get down to the original cause:
"Why did I miss that True/False question?"
"Because I didn't know the answer."
"Why didn't I know the answer?"
"Because I didn't notice it in the text book."
"Why didn't I notice it in the textbook?"
"Because I wasn't taking notes on key facts."
And there's your repeatable action: when you study your history text book, you will take notes on key facts.
What I've learned from many years of teaching and tutoring is that a lot of problems ultimately come down to the same root causes. So you can often track down what's happening just by reviewing a study skills troubleshooting guide like the comprehensive skills checklist that I include in the Power Student Habit Lab.
Make sure your Green Light statements can apply to situations similar to the one you're looking at, not only situations that are exactly like it.
When to Review
Just writing down the Green Lights is a very effective first step towards improving your work and making future tasks easier. By applying the three criteria (Positive, Definite, and Repeatable) to each statement, you've forced yourself to think carefully and concretely about exactly what your weakness is and how to overcome it.
But just writing down the changes is not going to change anything. You need to revisit these Green Light lists regularly.
So how often should you review them? As often as you have opportunities to practice.
Every time you have a new task, that's a chance to put your Green Lights into practice and solidify them as habits. If you've been adding your Green Lights to a separate list for each subject area, it should be easy to find the one you need for the task you're doing. Getting ready to write a paper? Pull out your "Composition Green Lights" list. Time for math homework? You need your "Algebra Green Lights" list.
Train yourself to refer to these lists as soon as you start working on each task. As soon as you pull that list out, you're really on your way to mastery. Congratulate yourself for taking that little step! That sense of accomplishment and satisfaction helps to lock in the habit.
As you read through the list, reaffirm each of those Green Light statements. Read it out loud. Imagine yourself taking that action. Again, try to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that you're developing a great new habit that's going to make you even more awesome than you already are.
Keep at it! Right now, you're taking the first steps on a journey that will take you from discouragement and a sense of inadequacy to a confident mastery of everything you study. It's ultimately a joyful process. When you see yourself racking up more and more successes as a student, you'll start to see yourself as someone who's good at learning and even start to enjoy uncovering more ways to improve. You'll feel motivated to improve rather than beaten down by a sense of failure.
You might even start to smile when you see red ink.

What is the tone of your relationship with red ink?
Disgust? Resentment? Abject dread?
It shouldn't be surprising that most of us, especially students, have a few negative feelings about red ink. Apart from the natural associations with danger, we've learned throughout our lives that the color red stands for mistakes, punishment, and failure. If everything you ever did wrong was marked in green, you'd probably want to punch Kermit the Frog instead of Elmo.
When the hard-won fruit of your academic labors comes back to you from the teacher with red writing all over it, your initial reaction may be to feel a bit let down, defeated, and discouraged.
Maybe it won't come as a shock to read that this is an unproductive way for you to absorb negative feedback. You've probably heard a million times that the key to improving yourself is not to stop making mistakes, but to learn from the ones you do make. So all those marks on your work aren't a sign that you're failing. They mean that you're growing, right?
You don't grow automatically by making mistakes and having them pointed out to you. Even if you have a positive attitude towards the negative feedback you get on your work, that's still not enough to move you forward.
Every time you get feedback from an instructor, that means that a highly skilled person has spent time thinking specifically about how you personally can improve your skills and deepen your knowledge. That's great! But what are you going to do with that information?
There's one more step you need to take. It's something you should do every day, but most students never do it at all.
The Green Light Method
Before you toss that marked paper, or file it, or jam it into a crumpled heap under your bed (or whatever your organizational system is), there's a simple but absolutely essential thing you need to do with each piece of feedback on that paper: transform it into a positive, definite, repeatable action. This action is your "Green Light," a powerful tool to move yourself forward as a student.
Once you've identified this very specific action, don't just resolve to perform that action from now on. Resolutions are fine, but they don't work in the long run. Instead, start training yourself right now so that over time, this action will become automatic. In other words, make it a habit.

Here's my proven process for making sure your Green Lights don't just fade away:
Once you've turned a piece of feedback into a Green Light, you don't need it any more. You've digested the red ink and processed it into something useful. Unless you want to hang onto it for its sentimental value, you can probably throw that paper in the trash now.
If there's information on it that you may still need, keep it out of the way in a well-marked file folder in a drawer or box where you can find it later. But if you can, the best thing is usually to copy that information into a consolidated study guide (like my 90-Second Review sheet) and throw the original paper away.
Use the Green Light Method for every problem set, worksheet, quiz, test, paper, or project you get back, and soon you'll have a master list of the most important habits that you personally need to develop in order to do better in every subject.
Following this method takes a little more time than just adding the paper to your folder or drawer or the perilously teetering stack of homework in the back of your closet. But think of it an investment of time now to get huge returns later. If you actually do this every day for just a few weeks, you'll be amazed at how much more easily and quickly you do all your work in the future.

There are a million blog posts about the core study habits that will lead to success in school and life, and they're not hard to find. If you do a quick search, you'll find the same recommendations everywhere: things like using a planner to organize your time, creating and following a study plan, and active listening and reading. These recommendations are everywhere. The fact is, you already know most of them. You could probably sit down right now and write a list of twenty things you could do better.
So why aren't you already doing them?
When I ask students this question, I am not surprised to hear answers like:
If you're like most students, these answers are not only wrong; they're also preventing you from solving the problem. Will power and motivation are limited, unreliable resources. If you're depending on them to drive big changes in your study habits, you're going to be disappointed.
What's worse, every time you make a big resolution to improve yourself as a student, and then sooner or later run out of steam (motivation and will power), the disappointment you feel teaches you to look at yourself as a "bad student." Every failure makes you feel more like the kind of person who just can't improve. But that's not true! If you want to be a better student, then you already have it in you to get there. You just need to take a different path.
The best students in the world know that you don't achieve excellence by fighting against yourself. You have to want to do the things that lead to success. You have to make good decisions joyfully. Instead of forcing yourself to eat your academic vegetables, gradually learn to love them. Step by step, become the kind of person that simply wants to do all those things you know you "should" be doing.
How do you do that? To put it simply, stop making resolutions, and start making habits.
The Ultimate Habit
If you wanted to create an evil robot army, obviously the first step would be to design and build an evil robot that can build other evil robots. Why waste your time and energy personally building thousands of robots when you can make the process practically automatic? In much the same way, the most powerful thing you can do to develop better habits is to start by creating a habit that can create other habits.
Unfortunately, it's a difficult one to establish, because you may not even be sure whether you're doing it or not. It's easier to make a habit of something that you can picture yourself doing. You can pretty easily visualize things like eating healthier or exercising. But what does making a habit look like? What are the actual steps involved? If you don't answer those questions, you won't be able to see and celebrate your success.
Here's how I do it: for about twenty to thirty minutes after lunch each day, I grab my journal, and close myself into a quiet room I call my Habit Lab. This physical relocation is an extremely important part of the process. It means that the first step in the action of making habits is something I can visualize, measure, and celebrate. Inside the Lab, I check my progress on the habits I've been working on. I think about what changes I want to make in my life and what habits would support those. I make a specific, measurable plan for how I will establish these habits. Finally, I physically rehearse the plan.
The time I spend in the Lab is blocked off on my calendar every day. It's sacred ground, the one thing that I won't let go. If my house burned down tomorrow morning I would still hit the Habit Lab after lunch. I know that no matter what else happens, I'm actively becoming a more effective, virtuous, happy, and healthy person every day.
Inside the Habit Lab
Making a habit is more than just saying to yourself, "I'm going to do this thing now." And it's more than just doing the thing again and again. Those are both important aspects of the process, but neither of them in themselves guarantees that the action will become a habit. The key to creating a habit is to reward yourself repeatedly for the decision to take the action. To do that, you need to have a definite plan, so that you can observe and celebrate that decision.
Your Habit Lab is the place where you will create that plan.
You have to train yourself to study more effectively the way you would train a dog to roll over. That means that when you're trying to make an action into a habit, you have to rehearse the first step of the action many times a day, and reward yourself each time. To do that consistently, you need to plan ahead. The Habit Lab is your command center for planning the positive changes you're going to make. Keep coming back, and there's truly no limit to what you can accomplish.
